Biodiversity Management Committees

The Biodiversity Management Committees (BMCs) are local level bodies established to implement specific provisions of the Act

Section 41(1) - of the Act mandates every local body to constitute a Biodiversity Management Committee within its areas for the purpose of promoting conservation, sustainable use and documentation of biological diversity including preservation of habitats, conservation of land races, folk varieties and cultivars, domesticated stocks and breeds of animals and microorganisms and chronicling of knowledge relating to biological diversity.

Section 43(1) - states that, there shall be constituted a Fund to be called the Local Biodiversity Fund at every area notified by the State Government where any institution of self-government is functioning. The Tamil Nadu Biodiversity Board has facilitated constitution of 16 BMCs and efforts are underway for constitution of BMCs across the state.The appointment of a nodal person for each district is also underway;
